Sherwood is a large residential area in the north-west of Nottingham, it is surrounded by Woodthorpe, Mapperley, Sherwood Rise, Basford and Bestwood. Sherwood was formerly known as Sherwood Estate and in the aftermath of the First World War, the city went through a major expansion where 2000 homes were built in just a few years. Between 1870-1910 the city saw businesses in the area grow as there are several carved, dated stones in buildings which indicate development in the area.
Sherwood is home to two of the city’s biggest institutes, Nottingham City Hospital and Nottingham Prison. The City hospital is older than the Queens Medical Centre but they both form the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Although the hospital has no A&E departments, it does provide general medical and surgical services to the general population. The prison is a catergory B mens prison which serves the courts in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire and is located on Perry Road.
